# What is an AI micro drama?

**Short answer:** An AI micro drama is a serialized story of very short episodes, usually 9:16 vertical and about a minute each, whose images, video and often voices are generated by AI models instead of filmed with actors. Micro drama, short drama and vertical drama are mostly names for the same format.

## The terms

Names people use for the format:

| Term | What it usually means |
| --- | --- |
| Short drama | Serialized drama in short episodes; the most common English term |
| Micro drama | The same, stressing very short episodes of one to two minutes |
| Vertical drama | The same, stressing 9:16 phone framing |
| AI short drama | Any of the above where the picture is generated by AI models |

## What makes one

- Episodes of about a minute; ours run 60–70 seconds.
- Dozens of episodes, each opening on a hook and ending on a cliffhanger.
- A small recurring cast that must look the same in every shot.
- Melodrama genres: revenge, romance, hidden identity, rivalry.
- Captions burned in for viewers watching without sound.

## How the AI part works

Nothing is filmed. Writers produce an episode guide and shot list; an image model makes reference sheets for each character and location; a video model renders every shot as a clip of a few seconds, often with dialogue and sound generated in the same pass; an editor or tool assembles the clips into episodes. [Blood Sun: The Fall of Kratos](https://arc.katechon.technology/films/blood-sun) is a 45-episode example built from 268 generated shots.

## Is it real drama?

The story, structure and editing are written by people; the performances and images are generated. AI micro dramas can look painted, 3D-animated or photographic depending on the style chosen. Our own range from a pulp oil-painting look (Blood Sun) to prestige 3D animation (High Note). Whether audiences accept them is decided episode by episode by whether the story pulls them to the next swipe.

## What one costs

Across our first five series the video cost $2.26 per finished minute. A 30-episode series of one-minute episodes is in the hundreds of dollars of video, not thousands; see [the full cost breakdown](https://arc.katechon.technology/answers/how-much-does-it-cost-to-make-an-ai-short-drama).

## Where Katechon Arc fits

Arc is a studio for exactly this format: episode planning, a shared cast, storyboards and 9:16 rendering in one project.

Arc makes the episodes; it is not a viewing app and does not distribute or sell them.

## People also ask

### Are AI short dramas real actors?

No. In an AI short drama the characters are generated from reference images and the performances are rendered by a video model; there are no actors on set.

### Why are micro dramas popular?

They fit phone viewing: one-minute episodes, constant hooks and simple, high-stakes stories that are easy to binge.
