## Open weights versus hosted

The Wan2.2 repository is published under the Apache-2.0 license, with text-to-video, image-to-video, speech-to-video and animation models whose weights are on Hugging Face under Wan-AI. (Source: Wan-Video/Wan2.2 on GitHub, https://github.com/Wan-Video/Wan2.2, checked 2026-10-18)

We could not confirm open weights for Wan 2.5, 2.6 or 3.0 from Alibaba's public repositories on 2026-10-18. Treat the newest Wan versions as hosted, paid models unless the publisher releases them.

## Is running it yourself actually free?

- The license is free; the compute is not. The larger Wan 2.2 models need a high-memory GPU, and renting one by the hour has its own cost.
- Self-hosting makes sense when you render a lot, need full control or cannot send content to a hosted API.
- For a few minutes of video, hosted Wan 3.0 at $6.00 per minute at 720p is usually cheaper than your time setting up a GPU.

## Where Katechon Arc fits

If you want a managed pipeline for a whole series rather than running a model yourself, Arc handles scripts, references, storyboards and video in one project, on Seedance 2.0 models.

Arc does not offer Wan and cannot run open-weight models you host; if open weights are the requirement, Wan 2.2 on your own hardware is the route.
